November 2006
Dear Parents,
The focus of the NorthEast Thunder Volleyball Club is on fun, skills, and team chemistry. We set out to create a club that was different from those already offered in the area. We did not set out to be a club for players on an invitation only basis. We did not want to be a club whose annual fees make membership a burden on many families. We decided that what we really wanted was a volleyball club that would be home to players who shared a love for the game and a desire to improve. We would accomplish this by offering affordable participation in practices and tournaments with enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer coaches.
With this philosophy as our foundation, parents and players need to understand that we will not "sit" or "bench" a player to make a team more competitive. This may, in fact, mean losing a game or a match that could have been won with a different group of players. Therefore, any player that puts forth their best effort has not only earned the right to play, but to stay in the game.
In determining the level (age group) for a player, we strongly consider their preference. The club’s needs are equally as important in deciding if a player should move up or not. We understand that most of you and your children are accustomed to being grouped by ability. During the school season this is usually the case. Although parent input is appreciated, we will always attempt to do what is best for the player and club, even if that may seem at odds with a parent’s desire. Please understand that our coaches are all volunteers, dedicated to helping your child improve their game and to grow as a person. While winning is a prime focus of society today, it would greatly help your childs well being if we would all reinforce their personal accomplishments instead of their teams win or loss.
One way to help your child better understand the sport of volleyball is to become more familiar with the rules and administration of the game. The best means to accomplishing this task is for each player to become a certified scorekeeper or second referee. However, this is not just an added benefit of playing for NorthEast Thunder; IREVA Region mandates that each club is required to provide a scorekeeper and second referee for all tournaments.
Thank you all for a great start to the season. Well see you in the gym!
